What about the law’s requirement to love God?

Galatians 5:14 (ESV)

14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Paul is not suggesting that the law is only focused on relationships between people. He understands loving service to fulfil the message of Old Testament law,1 and to be a result of love for God. If we love God and delight in him, then we will seek to love our neighbours as ourselves. Love for God expresses itself in love for our neighbour.2 By quoting Leviticus 19:18, Paul shows that the law itself upholds love as the main goal of law keeping. He also affirms, thereby, that the law is a valid expression of God’s will.3
