Paul’s words suggest that those who live by the Spirit will be able to overcome their sinful desires. This is not a promise of perfection, but progress.1 Whilst we wait for the return of Jesus Christ and the new resurrection bodies that he has promised (Philippians 3:21), we will continue to sin. Sinful desires will continue to spring forth from our hearts (Mark 7:20–23). However, for the Christian who is empowered by the Spirit and instructed by God’s law, he can expect growth in obedience and godly living.2
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
