1. Galatians 5:21 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is the purpose of Paul’s warning?

Galatians 5:21 (ESV)

21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Paul is not talking about lapses, but habitual behaviour.1 His warning serves as a reminder to believers that those who belong to God must not use their freedom to indulge the sinful nature (Galatians 5:13), but to pursue works of love. Good works are a consequence of justification.2 Those who continue to live as they please without repentance or concern, thereby, show that they do not belong to God and do not have the Spirit.3
