Jesus reads their thoughts in his spirit.
These words can hardly be interpreted to mean in himself,
for Mark uses other expressions for that (en heautois Mark 2:8; en tais kardiais Mark 2:6). We must think instead of the Spirit that lives in Jesus (Mark 1:8, Mark 1:10, Mark 1:12): through this Spirit he examines and knows the hearts of people. Here the Spirit of God is in the man Jesus, inseparable (it is one person that acts), but to be distinguished. The scribes focus on this man
(Mark 2:7) but unexpectedly become aware of the Spirit
