Paul does not just address the saints at Philippi, but their spiritual leaders as well—the overseers and deacons
(Philippians 1:2). Overseers,
or bishops
as it is sometimes translated, is a reference to elders. We do not know exactly why Paul addresses them in this letter. He never does so in any of his other letters. What is important to note, however, is the word with
: with the overseers and deacons.
These men—called to lead and shepherd the flock of Christ—are not above the saints. Overseers and deacons (and ministers, for that matter) are not above us. They stand alongside us, with us, all in need of the same gospel, all in need of God’s grace and mercy. It is from this basis that all elders and deacons must lead and serve God’s people.
