Throughout his sermon, Jesus has authoritatively interpreted the laws that God previously gave through Moses. Implicitly, in doing so, he is claiming to be God. The key idea that he has conveyed is that Old Testament law can only be rightly interpreted and understood when it is understood in relation to the coming of the Messiah (Matthew 5:17–18) and the demand for perfection (holiness). 1
