Historically, the poor referred to the economically destitute who were forced to rely on God for provision in ways that others were not. The concept of being poor in spirit
draws on this background and refers to all those who depend wholly on God (Psalm 40:16–17 Psalm 69:32–33). 1 These people readily acknowledge their spiritual poverty, 2 and are conscious of their sins and unworthiness before God. 3 They are also those who are not deceived by the attraction of wealth. 4
