What does it mean to be meek?

Matthew 5:5 (ESV)

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Jesus’ reference to the meek is based on Psalm 37:11. These people are known for being humble and gentle, as well as showing concern to help those in need. To be meek is not the same as being weak, but it does mean to seek the interests of others before your own. Moses is said to have been a very humble and meek man (Numbers 12:3), and he was willing to let his person and privilege be attacked, 1 to suffer an injustice himself, rather than commit an injury to others. 2
