What does it mean to be a peacemaker?

Matthew 5:9 (ESV)

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

To be a peacemaker is to make peace between people—in families, workplaces, churches (James 3:18), and communities, wherever people gather together. This desire (to make peace) flows from the peace with God that has been created by Christ (Colossians 1:20). 1 Such a person is calm in debate, respectful of others’ opinions, and willing to listen to different viewpoints with fairness and courtesy. 2 Jesus’ reference to peacemakers would be particularly applicable in his time where many Jews were looking for a revolutionary leader who would throw off the yoke of the Romans through bloodshed. 3
