Proverbs 29:8 (ESV)

8 Scoffers set a city aflame, but the wise turn away wrath.

Scorners are like a destructive fire to the society in which they live. The scorn they spread causes people to turn against each other, and they arouse the wrath of God. In contrast, the wise, who have the highest regard for the Prince of Peace, are peacemakers at every level, serving to settle strife between neighbours, and endeavouring to bring others into a saving relationship with the Lord. In this way they prevent immeasurable hostility, misery, and destruction. Does our influence promote peace between others, or stir up strife?
