In 2:5–18 the author picks up the thread of 1:1–14 and switches from a warning style back to an explanatory style. After the first series of scriptural quotes in 1:5–14, a second series now follows in 2:5–18. After considering the fact of Christ’s exaltation (1:4–14) we now receive the grounds for this exaltation, Christ’s substitutionary suffering and death (2:5–18).1
