Laish (identified as Leshem in Joshua 19:47) was a city of the Sidonians, located about 40 kilometres north of the Sea of Galilee, at the northernmost end of the Promised Land. It was at the foot of Mount Hermon, and thus in a well-watered, productive agricultural area. Laish was included in the land that Israel was supposed to conquer (see Joshua 13:1–7), but was not allotted to Dan.
7 Then the five men departed and came to Laish and saw the people who were there, how they lived in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting, lacking nothing that is in the earth and possessing wealth, and how they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone.
