Instead of the Lord being Jerusalem’s protector, he became her hunter. He spread a net (Nebuchadnezzar and his soldiers) to catch her. The “fire” that was sent down into her bones can be understood figuratively as God’s anger and wrath. But it also came literally: the temple, palace and houses of Jerusalem were destroyed with fire (2 Kings 25:9).
Through these events, God took away all Jerusalem’s strength and health. Today, he can also catch an unfaithful church in a net—by sending religious delusions and lies their way (2 Thessalonians 2:11–12; see also Matthew 13:14–15)!
13 “From on high he sent fire; into my bones he made it descend; he spread a net for my feet; he turned me back; he has left me stunned, faint all the day long.
