On one of Jerusalem’s feast days, everyone would come to the city. But now the Lord has called all imaginable terrors to come to Jerusalem. Everyone who was brought up by the city has fallen. Jerusalem is like a mother who has lost all her children—and she can only weep before the Lord who has done this.
Lamentations 2:1–22 ends in darkness, without comfort. Jerusalem has now done the only thing that she can do: she has humbled herself and asked God to pity her. What will the Lord do now?
22 You summoned as if to a festival day my terrors on every side, and on the day of the anger of the LORD no one escaped or survived; those whom I held and raised my enemy destroyed.
