Introduction
Are all religions the same? How do we distinguish between claims about revelation? Writing to the Galatians, the apostle Paul gives them two reasons why they can be sure that the gospel which he proclaimed to them is a message from above and not below.
A message from above
Explain: how does the transformation in Paul’s life testify to the divine origin of the gospel?
Explain: how does the preaching of Paul testify to the divine origin of the gospel?
Explain: how does the message of the gospel differ from the message proclaimed by other religions?
Praise and service
Explain/Apply: can we trust the Bible/Gospel of Paul?
Explain/Apply: reflect on the grace of God, the grace shown to Paul, and the grace shown to believers.
Explain/Apply: reflect on the call to service, the conversion, and the commission of Paul. Do we also receive a task from Jesus when we become Christians? What is that task?
Concluding prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank you that your gospel is a message from above and not below, truth that you have revealed and not the sinful reflections of man. Thank you that your Son Jesus is our King, and that through faith in him we can be adopted as your sons and daughters. We are those who have the right to live in your presence. Thank you also for your Spirit, that he is powerfully at work in our lives even as he was at work in the life of your servant Paul. May he continue to help us so that we may grow in our understanding of your Word and submission to your instructions.
Especially in the week to come, we want to be faithful servants. Make it our aim to please you with what we think, do, and say: on the bus, in our use of time, the words we speak to spouse, our conduct with our children—we want to serve you Lord. Please help us to do so. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
11 For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man’s gospel.
