One God in three persons

1 Samuel 24:1–22 (ESV)

1 When Saul returned from following the Philistines, he was told, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.”

What does 1 Samuel 24 reveal about who God is (Father)?

  • The LORD is sovereign. He appoints his king and he removes his king in his time.

  • The LORD is just. He will bring vengeance against those who do wrong.

  • The LORD communicates. Through his Word the LORD gives clear guidance to his people that is applicable for behaviour in all circumstances.

  • The LORD rewards. Under the terms of the old covenant, the LORD promised blessing for obedience (cf. Deuteronomy 28).

What does 1 Samuel 24 reveal about what God does in my place and on my behalf (Son)?

  • Jesus Christ is the King who always allowed Biblical principles rather than circumstances to govern his actions. When he was given the chance for glory without suffering, he remained faithful to God. He did not fall into the trap of the devil. Because he lived the perfect life, he was able to give his life as a ransom for sinners. In doing so, God can show mercy to me (because the penalty of my sin has been paid by his Son Jesus).

What does 1 Samuel 24 reveal about what God does in me and through me (Holy Spirit)?

  • God the Holy Spirit helps me to apply Biblical principles also in difficult circumstances. He also helps me to pray to God when I’ve been hurt, thereby leaving vengeance in his hands (cf. Romans 12:9-19).
