Sermon goal for 1 Samuel 28:1-25

1 Samuel 28:1–25 (ESV)

1 In those days the Philistines gathered their forces for war, to fight against Israel. And Achish said to David, “Understand that you and your men are to go out with me in the army.”

The goal of your sermon for 1 Samuel 28 is to encourage Christian believers to listen to the Word of the LORD and submit to his instructions. Be aware of the temptation to focus too much on the actions of the medium at Endor and the details of what happened in her home. Make sure that the overarching message of the passage is also the message of your sermon: the fall of Saul because of his refusal to listen to the LORD. Highlight the differences between Saul and David, and then also between David and Jesus. Finally, in concluding your sermon, warn God’s people to stay away from any kind attempts to contact the dead or engage with the spiritual realm.
