The Hebrews are called to revere
(yr’) their parents. The term revere
is commonly translated as fear.
The word bears the sense of awe that leads to obedience. The Hebrews were to recognize their parents’ God-given position and submit to their authority. Through them, children learn what God is like and what he requires.
3 Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.
