The suffering of the people of Jerusalem did not end after the fall of the city. There were still many deaths, caused by the sword outside and by hunger and disease inside. This is just as Moses had warned (Deuteronomy 32:25). Not only these circumstances but also her own guilt is tormenting Jerusalem. Now that all her lovers have disappointed her, she turns to the Lord for help and mercy.
20 “Look, O LORD, for I am in distress; my stomach churns; my heart is wrung within me, because I have been very rebellious. In the street the sword bereaves; in the house it is like death.
