The first section (Hebrews 5:1–4) has “every high priest” as its subject; in Hebrews 5:5–10 Christ is the subject. He is compared to the high priest. First the author discusses the performance (Hebrews 5:1–3) and the appointment (Hebrews 5:4) of the high priest. Then, in reverse order, he deals with the appointment (Hebrews 5:5–6) and the ministry of Christ (Hebrews 5:7–10).1
1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
