  2. Exposition

Why does Jesus make reference to Solomon in his splendour?

Matthew 6:29 (ESV)

29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

Solomon’s great wealth is described in 1 Kings 10:14–29 and 2 Chronicles 9:13–28. These historical details were well known amongst Jesus’ hearers and thus they serve as a good point of comparison. Despite his riches, Solomon was not clothed as wonderfully as the ordinary flowers of the field. The beauty which God creates is incomparably better than what even the wealthiest people can produce.1
