But first, much suffering awaits the Son of Man. He will be rejected. Already earlier, Jesus has spoken about this: The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed
(Luke 9:22). From the side of the people, the same will happen to him. He will be rejected en masse (by many).
Significant here is the Greek word dei, or must.
Behind all the suffering that will be poured out over Jesus is even a must
from God. Already the prophet Isaiah prophesied (in Isaiah 53:3–5) this: He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief…. He was despised, and we esteemed him not. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities.
God’s hand turned against Jesus. That is why the suffering was inescapable for him.
25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
