This section picks up on Jesus’ word in Revelation 22:7 about coming soon
and expands on its implications. Christ Jesus comes with fitting recompense
(Revelation 22:12), which in turn determines people’s eternal destination (Revelation 22:14–15). Lest hearers resist the implicit warning of Revelation 22:12–15, Jesus insists that the entire book of Revelation, with all its blessings and curses (including Revelation 22:14–15) are his words (Revelation 22:16)—and so Jesus underscores his divine identity (Revelation 22:16 echoes Revelation 22:13). Revelation 22:17 relates the response of Spirit and Bride, and then invites every hearer to response in similar fashion, including the cautious and doubting. So there is an implicit dialogue
in these verses where speaker and hearer interact at a deep level.
12 “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.
