Revelation 22:12–17 is constructed as a dialogue, with explicit speakers (Jesus in Revelation 22:12–13, Revelation 22:16) and implicit responders that need guidance in how to respond well (Revelation 22:14–15, Revelation 22:17). This dynamic can make this passage appear confusing. Yet once understood, this dynamic makes the passage very instructive. Grasping Jesus’ identity, together with consequences for correct or incorrect appreciation of his identity, places urgency upon one and all to be properly prepared for Jesus’ imminent return. Proper preparation looks like washing one’s robes, which is shorthand for repentance and confession of sin, and appealing to the Saviour’s sacrifice for forgiveness and cleansing.
12 “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.
