Interpreting Matthew 7:6, most commentators focus on understanding what is meant by sacred things/pearls as well as dogs and pigs. In the Greek, however, the verbs ”give” and ”throw” are emphasized. In particular, the Greek word for ”throw” is used earlier in Jesus’ sermon always with reference to being thrown out of the kingdom and into hell fire (Matthew 5:13, Matthew 5:25, Matthew 5:29, Matthew 5:30; Matthew 6:30). Jesus’ earlier use of this verb supports the understanding that he is warning disciples not to drive their brothers and sisters out of the church community through a critical attitude.1
6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.
