It is possible that an eel-like fish was in view which may have resembled a snake. Otherwise it is not clear why Jesus refers to a snake.1 Perhaps his purpose is to emphasise an animal that is dangerous so as to affirm that it would be a cruel and ridiculous response to a request for a fish.
