What does it mean for false prophets to be ferocious wolves?

Matthew 7:15 (ESV)

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

Wolves are often used as a metaphor in the Bible (Isaiah 11:6; Jeremiah 5:6; Ezekiel 22:27).1 Given the fact that the Israelites were an agrarian society, they had a lot of contact with wild animals who sought to feed on their livestock. Building on this common experience, Jesus affirms that false prophets might initially appear to serve his purposes, but ultimately their aim is to hurt God’s people. The danger of their deceptive ways is emphasized by comparing them to wolves.2
