1. Matthew 7:21 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does it mean that some who call Jesus Lord will not enter the kingdom?

Matthew 7:21 (ESV)

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Given what Jesus has said previously about false prophets (Matthew 7:15–20), we should understand him to confirm that there is no place in the kingdom for them. Those wolves who come in sheep clothing remain wolves and they will not be allowed to enter the kingdom, they will not live in the new creation. Presumably, those who follow after such prophets will also be excluded from the kingdom.1 Though a profession of faith is part of Christian duty (Matthew 10:32–33; Romans 10:9–10; 1 Timothy 6:12), a profession by itself is not conclusive evidence of submission to Christ.2
