In all likelihood, alcohol was in use here. The verb used for drank
implies this was an occasion for drinking. It is the same word that was used to describe Samson’s wedding feast (Judges 14:12, Judges 14:17). In the Sodom narrative in Genesis, however, there is no allusion to drink. This action of the host and his guest would explain in part their reactions later to the Benjamites: their reason is clouded by alcohol.1
