Deuteronomy 3:14–15 (ESV)

14 Jair the Manassite took all the region of Argob, that is, Bashan, as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called the villages after his own name, Havvoth-jair, as it is to this day.)

Over verses 14–15 the details of how the territory of the half-tribe of Manasseh was parcelled out are given. Jair received the northern territory, which consisted of the fertile region of Argob. He renamed the villages after himself, since he had been the one responsible for capturing them (see Numbers 32:41). The northern section of the region known as Gilead was given to Machir.
