Why practice hospitality?

1 Peter 4:9 (ESV)

9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.

Romans 12:13 (ESV)

13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

One of the most common complaints against churches is that they are unfriendly, and it is the most common complaint because it is true. We have lost the sense and the spirit of the Scriptures on this topic. The problem can be traced back to the simple neglect of hospitality. God’s people have drifted away from what the Bible teaches and what God expects of them in this area. Many of the woes of the modern church can be traced to a neglect of this most holy privilege and obligation.

If hospitality were practiced (and as hospitality is practiced), we see that the people of God are able to come together and corrective action happens as people come together and as they encourage one another. The New Testament supports this idea that hospitality is an important aspect of the ministry of the church. And if it is part of the ministry of the church, then there should be some form of hospitality flowing from the church in an official capacity. And there are many New Testament examples of that.1
