The law requires that the leaders of the assembly inquire, probe, investigate thoroughly
an alleged crime (Deuteronomy 13:14). In a murder case, the law requires two or three witnesses to convict the accused. So where is the Levite’s servant, and the old man? For that matter, the Gibeahites should be given the opportunity to cross-examine the Levite and put forward their case. The Levite, however, ignores the law, his testimony stands unchallenged, and he then calls upon the people to give a verdict now. For they are armed for battle. He does not want them to spend time reflecting. He is violating the law that as a Levite he was supposed to teach the people. He makes no reference to the Lord, no appeal to him to defend the holiness of the Promised Land.
7 Behold, you people of Israel, all of you, give your advice and counsel here.”
