Exodus: God liberates. This motif returns throughout Scripture, until in the New Testament, we see our liberation from the devil and death through (the sacrifice of) Jesus.
In the New Testament we see Jesus’ victory over the great serpent, the devil. The devil tries everything to tempt Jesus (in the desert), to fight Jesus (evil spirits), to let him succumb to death (on the cross).
But Jesus conquers to dethrone the ruler of this world. The devil's power is now limited, and he will be judged when Jesus returns. Then the powers of sin and death will disappear. The last enemy, death, will be destroyed: Death is swallowed up in victory
(1 Corinthians 15:54).
12 For each man cast down his staff, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs.
