We see Jesus building his church through the ordinary plans and prayers of his people. Strategic plans made by those who do not have the full details of providence. Ordinary means, preaching in the synagogue, conversations in homes. All of it used by Jesus to take his gospel to the ends of the earth.
Today, the true church of Jesus Christ is called to make similar plans. Plans for the ministry of God’s Word to take place in new places. We need to be strategic and thoughtful, to use the resources that we have in accordance with the purposes of our King. As church members, we should also get behind the plans which a council has made where they are in keeping with the vision of Jesus Christ.
When Paul and Barnabas go out on their journey they are supported by the church at large, they are commended to the grace of God. Admittedly, we are not told what exactly this support looked like, but we can reasonably imagine that it included prayer, money and contacts. Prayer before they leave and throughout the time of their journey. Money for food and lodging, a list of contacts to follow up on the island of Cyprus and the towns in Galatia.
For us today, these are also the ways we can get behind the plans that our councils have made. Prayer for the ministry of God’s Word. Giving to support the ministry of God’s Word. Inviting friends and family to come and listen to the ministry of God’s Word. Jesus Christ building his church through the plans and prayers of his people.
