The land of Canaan, which the Lord had promised Abraham he would give to his descendants, and which he did give in the time of Joshua, has now become the possession of strangers! In the case of the northern kingdom of Israel, this had already happened in 732 BC (2 Kings 17:24). Now the southern kingdom of Judah had also been taken in by enemies. The whole inheritance of Israel had fallen into the hands of pagans.
