Revelation 2:1–7 (ESV)

1 “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands.

Jesus Christ trims the lamps on the lampstand. He knows exactly what each lamp needs so that it shines optimally before God in his world. Jesus' trimming does not come with his adjusting dumb knobs, but comes with his calling people to take responsibility for their own love for the Bridegroom and acting accordingly.

A church may confess Jesus Christ as Lord. Yet that church cannot shine in this world (Matthew 5:14; Philippians 2:15) unless it loves its Bridegroom with the love that characterizes the newly-wed. It is for the church to ensure that it remain infatuated with her Saviour, and where that love is lacking to repent of its coolness.
