What are the seven stars?

Revelation 3:1 (ESV)

1 “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. “‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.

We have read of these seven stars already in Revelation 1:16 and Revelation 1:20. Jesus had explained that these seven stars are the angels of the seven churches. In the commentary on Revelation 1:20 we had concluded that the angels referred to the messenger from each church who was present on Patmos to receive a copy of John’s record of the Revelation Jesus showed him so that each messenger might in turn carry Christ’s message back to his church and read it there (see Revelation 1:3). The Word of Jesus Christ is of course the tool the Holy Spirit uses to change people to be the new creation the Lord wants them to be.
