With “discretion” is meant good judgment to decide what is truly important and what is not. Such discretion is only possible when someone fears the Lord (Proverbs 1:7; Proverbs 31:30).
When a woman does not have discretion, all her beauty is worthless—like a gold ring in a pig’s snout. She will not have the love, the wisdom, and the sensitivity to see what things in life are truly important.
Proverbs is written especially for young people (Proverbs 1:4, Proverbs 1:8). Here Solomon is teaching young men what they should be looking for in a woman. In choosing a wife, they should not look at external appearance in the first place. Otherwise they may regret their choice forever.
22 Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman without discretion.
