When Mordecai refused the clothes, Esther realized that something was gravely amiss. She also perceived that Mordecai was not willing to reveal the cause of his distress to just anyone. Therefore, she sent a trustworthy servant, Hathach, to go and enquire.
5 Then Esther called for Hathach, one of the king’s eunuchs, who had been appointed to attend her, and ordered him to go to Mordecai to learn what this was and why it was.
