Haman, whose life revolved around his own honour and fame, was as happy as could be. Not only had he just dined with the king and queen, but he had also been invited to dine with them on the following day! But then he saw Mordecai, who sat at the king’s gate again (evidently having exchanged his mourning clothes for his normal attire).
After three days of prayer and fasting, Mordecai again displayed faith and fearlessness. He had seen how powerful Haman was, and how cruelly Haman used his power against those who disregarded him. Yet he still refused to bow before Haman. Before this enemy of God, he would not even rise from his seat! As could be expected, Haman was filled with wrath.
9 And Haman went out that day joyful and glad of heart. But when Haman saw Mordecai in the king’s gate, that he neither rose nor trembled before him, he was filled with wrath against Mordecai.
