What does the term "depart" denote?

Philippians 1:23 (ESV)

23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.

In writing about dying he here uses a verb that in antiquity was used as a gentle expression for “dying”: “loosening” (analysai). This term is reminiscent of a ship leaving the harbour or a tent being taken down. The apostle understands death as a voyage that must be undertaken.1
