This verse is the same as Proverbs 16:25.
Some things look promising at first, only to bring a bitter taste afterwards. This is especially true of the broad way that is walked without God and his Word (Matthew 7:13f). Therefore, Proverbs emphasizes thoughtfulness, whereby the outcome of a matter is considered beforehand.
Various examples are given in Proverbs of things that deceive one with their apparent brilliance. The lips of the adulteress drip with honey, but in the end she is bitter as gall (Proverbs 5:3–4). Joy may end in grief (Proverbs 14:13). Quickly gained wealth will not be blessed at the end (Proverbs 20:21). In the end, wine bites like a snake (Proverbs 23:31–32). If you are hasty with accusations, you might be shamed in the end (Proverbs 25:8). One who pampers his servant will have grief in the end (Proverbs 29:21).
Thus, Proverbs reminds us to consider well before we begin.
12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.
