The meaning of the Hebrew word is not definitely known. It is quite possible that since it is preceded by “went out” and the next clause refers to Ehud closing doors, the noun refers to the vestibule at the front of the palace, immediately outside the king’s upper chamber. We can’t be sure. It could be a back door, a window, or a latrine. Regardless, Ehud knew how to make a quick and secret getaway within the palace.
23 Then Ehud went out into the porch and closed the doors of the roof chamber behind him and locked them.
