Christ as the leader in holy war

Judges 3:12–31 (ESV)

12 And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done what was evil in the sight of the LORD.

Genesis 3:15 points ahead to a showdown between two parties, alone. The Ehud narrative points ahead to that showdown between Christ and Satan. Christ needed to face the head of the enemy all alone. And he overcame with a decisive strike. He made a mockery of Satan and the evil powers, much like Ehud did. Colossians 2:15, “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in the cross.”

And now by his resurrection he summons us, his body, to share in his victory, to participate in the remaining fight, the mopping-up operation, much like Ehud called the Israelites to fight against the Moabites after the defeat of their king. Christ engages us, and he also empowers us with his Spirit, to cry out for his help in the fight against the forces of evil. We are called to wield the sword of the Spirit, the Scriptures, to stab and slay our idols. No one can stand against such spiritual power.
