This proverb speaks of someone “who isolates himself” or “who keeps himself apart.” What drives a person to isolate himself? It is because he “breaks out against all sound judgment.” It might be a grudge, or a sense of inferiority, or pure selfishness that keeps him away from others. Whatever the case, such a person does not listen to others’ wise advise and he estranges himself from everyone.
At bottom, such a person violates the command “Love your neighbour as yourself.” The only remedy is faith in Christ and the power of his Word and Spirit, whereby one is drawn out of oneself to start loving others.
1 Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.
