  2. Scripture context

How does Judges 5 recall other passages of Scripture?

Judges 5:1–31 (ESV)

1 Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day:

Judges 5:1–31 as a song of victory follows the story in Judges 4:1–24 of the Lord rescuing his people from Jabin and Sisera. If you look at biblical history, you see regularly that when God intervenes decisively to rescue his people, they respond with a song. You see that in the song of Moses in Exodus 15:1–27 after the Lord drowned the Egyptians in the Red Sea. You find it in the prayer of Hannah in 1 Samuel 2:1–36, after the Lord answered Hannah’s prayer and gave her a son. You see it in the song of David in 2 Samuel 22:1–51, where he sings of his deliverance from all his enemies. You see it in the majority of the Psalms. It is there twice in Luke 1:1–80, with Mary’s Magnificat and the song of Zechariah. And it is there in the new songs of the book of Revelation. God delivers his people, and they respond by singing about his new work of deliverance.
