The name Jeshua literally means, The Lord is salvation.
It is the Old Testament name from which the name Jesus
comes. Jeshua was the son of Jozadak and descendant of Jedaiah (one of the twenty-four priestly families organized by David in 1 Chronicles 24:1–31). He was the grandson of Seraiah, the high priest during the destruction of Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 6:14; 2 Kings 25:18). Jeshua was the first high priest of the Jewish community that returned from exile.
2 Then arose Jeshua the son of Jozadak, with his fellow priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel with his kinsmen, and they built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.
