Was Abram motivated by the fear that there wouldn’t be an heir? He had earlier expressed his fears to God when he said, “‘O Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?’ And Abram said, ’You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir’” (Genesis 15:2–3).
2 And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
