What do the Pleiades and Orion represent?

Amos 5:8 (ESV)

8 He who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns deep darkness into the morning and darkens the day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the surface of the earth, the LORD is his name;

Pleiades and Orion are the names given to star constellations that can be seen in the night sky. Reference to these two in particular may be suggestive of God’s providential control over the seasons (since these two constellations marked the beginning and end of the sailing season).1 More likely however, they were considered to be representatives of the heavenly bodies created by God and a testimony to his creative power and sovereign control.2
