1. Amos 6:6 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is signified by the people drinking wine in bowls and using the finest oils?

Amos 6:6 (ESV)

6 who drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!

Amos’s words point to debauchery and wastefulness. Instead of drinking wine from a cup (2 Samuel 12:3; Proverbs 23:31; Jeremiah 25:17) these people drink straight from storage basins. Anointing was common practice since oil kills lice, however, demanding finest quality oil for this is an example of excess.
